And yet, most managers receive very little training on the fundamentals of managing.

What if there was a way to accelerate your new managers’ development so that they could be effective in their roles, and engage and retain their reports?

Well, there is.

Does this sound familiar?

  • You have one or more managers reporting to you and you have no time to help them learn the ropes and develop their skills

  • You see your new managers struggling with the transition from being a “doer” to someone who helps others to do

  • Your new managers seem to be lost in the day-to-day and not able to think strategically enough to see the big picture

  • You end up sorting out unnecessary problems that could have been avoided altogether if only your new manager had come to you early enough.

Imagine how it would feel ...

Spending time with your team dealing with strategic opportunities and challenges, not day-to-day headaches

Knowing that your new managers will always come to you for help with the right things at the right time

Having more valuable input from your new manager on broader issues

Having a more engaged, productive team.

Course overview

In less than two hours per week, new managers will develop skills based on the repeatable patterns that successful managers use.

Participants access content online at a time and pace that works for them.

They meet with other participants online for an hour every two weeks for an instructor-facilitated session to consolidate their learning through case studies, interactive discussion, and Q&A.

Between sessions, participants meet with their assigned learning partner, when it suits them, to discuss content, share experiences, and build skills.

Organizations that invest in these strategies improve the effectiveness of their new managers.

What others are saying about the course

Not only the "what", but also the "how" and the "why"

Greg Byrgesen, VP, People Operations

"From day one, through to the course debrief, I felt that Sheila was dedicated not just to delivering, but also to adjusting the course to fit the dynamic of the group she was training. Sheila was always very organized, which was reflected in the efficient execution of the course. It is very evident that Sheila has taken the time throughout her career to think about not only the “what”, but also the “how” and the “why” of leading people. My favourite part of the course was the insight and activities that Sheila provided that allowed our leaders opportunities to self-evaluate; this really opened the door to thoughtful introspection and positive leadership change."

Highly recommend

Data Analytics and Integration Coordinator

"I found the Manage Better course extremely beneficial. It was a needed refresher for some of the concepts I have learned on similar courses in the past, and at the same time, a brand new approach geared for today with new leadership tips and tools. Sheila was phenomenal in the way she structured and taught the course. From use of Zoom technology enabling us to sit in our offices individually as well as break out into groups, to the whole group getting together at the end and finally to the one on one coaching session with Sheila, I would highly recommend this course."

Fresh perspective

Exploration Manager

"The course provided an opportunity to review our leadership assumptions and look at things from a fresh perspective. Sheila gave useful tools and references that allowed us to examine and better understand the behaviour of others as well as our own. She is very positive and was good at keeping us focused on what was important. I look forward to incorporating what I learned in the future."

Every time someone leaves your organization because of an incompetent boss, it costs you up to 150% of their salary to replace them.

And on top of that, poor managers cost you in time, overall productivity and for unnecessary mistakes.

How much are you spending each year because your inexperienced managers don’t have the skills, tools and support they need?

For example, the average starting salary of an engineer is $60,067, and the average starting salary for a person in a not-for-profit is $32,273, so if you can reduce the turnover by even one employee this year, you will realize measurable savings.

The total investment for each new manager in this program is just $2695.

There is literally NO RISK. We are so confident in the value of this training that if you don’t see a positive change in the effectiveness and confidence of your participants, we will refund the cost of the course.

Have questions?

We have answers.

  • What does the course schedule look like?

The course is designed with a few defined anchor points. These are the live sessions with Sheila. Between these sessions students have time to work at their own pace and on their own schedule on the material that will be discussed in the next live session.

  • Do you offer refunds?

Yes. We offer a full refund if you are not happy with the course.

  • What is a learning partner and who would mine be?

Learning partners come in many forms. They will be other students in the program, and might be a colleague, or someone from a local business, allowing you both to build your network. They might be a student from a similar business in another place. We will do our best to provide you with a learning partner who will allow you both to learn from each other. And, you might even find yourself with two learning partners!

  • What will we do in the facilitated sessions?

The facilitated sessions will provide an opportunity to learn additional content, discuss case studies, clarify the course content, ask questions, and to have some broader discussions in small breakout groups.

Is this course a good fit for your new manager?

This course is perfect for early-career managers who want to:

  • Improve their “soft skills” or people skills

  • Increase employee engagement and productivity

  • Fully understand and own the role they are in

  • Increase their ability to influence

  • Learn to manage expectations

  • Manage with confidence.

  • And who are willing to do the work.
The greatest learning will come as a result of the efforts each student makes to apply what they learn.

What others are saying

Very valuable

Business Development

"Overall, very valuable training. The content was very useful and forced me to think about (and even rethink) my management style. I also thought that the delivery by Sheila was impactful and allowed for immediate application on the job. The one-on-one bonus session was a great way to reflect / put things in context and end the course!"

Well structured and well balanced

Integrity Engineering Manager

"I am really glad, I had an opportunity to attend your “Manage Better” program. The content presented was well balanced with lecture-type presentation videos and remotely delivered classroom-work groups setup. The content was appropriately portioned and spaced to allow busy managers and supervisors to take advantage of self-learning and group discussed delivery. I personally enjoyed a reminder of some basic leadership and managerial concepts, especially well structured, as I call it “Role of the Manager – the Bucket List”; Boundary Setting and Delegation. I think, I am taking away from this training course a lot of well-structured ideas for the future, which I have already started to re-introduce to my team and already seeing some positive responses to e.g. goal setting and job description discussions."

Informative and insightful

Asset Manager

"I recently attended Sheila’s “Manage Better” course and found it very informative and insightful. Particularly in a world that can be unnecessarily complex, it was refreshing to have such an important subject simplified."
